Not sure if I will bother reading the next in the series. I liked the southern gothic feel, but some of the story felt like Twilight, with magic instead of vampires.

I think if this book lost some of it's younger reader undertones I would have given it 4 stars. I am a 30 something reading teen fiction so I am being a bit mean. I did consider giving up on it during the first few chapter but it does get much better. Turned into quite lovely story that certainly opens things up for Beautiful Darkness. I did enjoy the fact it was written from the boys point of view.

I first found out about this book after I watched the movie. It did not determine away from reading all four of the books! This first book takes you on a journey of two highschoolers from different sides of the magical universe. When they come together, it is true love in a young sense. The world building is beautifully done, the characters are fantastic and so real. You feel like you knew them in your science class. The magic is nonstop!

I was a bit tentative about reading this book. I tried to read it once before but couldn't get into it but I gave it another chance and loved it!!!!! The characters had more depth to them, regardless of what happened. Do I think it's better than Twilight? In certain aspects, it is but how can you compare the world of casters to the world of vampires and say that one world is better than the other?

The authors have written this world beautifully and made it into another character. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!!! :):)

Such a beautiful, wonderous story! I want to learn a lot more about Ethan and Lena! And I really like how they stuck together, no matter what.

Did this as part of a 'read all the books on my shelves that I've had but not read for over a decade' challenge. It left me with only one question: why is the YA boom so obsessed in romanticising confederate soldiers? Also super fun and really cool to see direct evidence as to why I had the WORST body image issues in my teen years. I'll hand it to the writers this truly is a piece from the mid-late 2000s.

+0.25 stars because the writing was at least coherent

thought it had a few things going for it but overall it’s just not that good. shhh i can’t say that because my boyfriend made me read it cause it’s his favorite book. nobody tell him i gave it 2 stars. honestly might read the sequel or at least start it cause cause i’m slightly intrigued by the cliffhanger.
