If watching the news doesn't make you angry enough- about victims' voices going ignored or mocked, gross misunderstandings about what consent means, etc- then you may want to check out this book. Each section is someone's account of a sexual assault- in their many forms- and each one is awful. It's important that it exists, and I can't think of a time when it would be more relevant. But you need to be in the mood for this one.

Take is as a Compliment offers a series of stories, one right after the other, of sexual cringeyness. From strangers casually putting their hands all over a young girl, to date rape, to abusive relationships, it's a lot. And while the title itself does not appear in the stories, it undergirds the entire collection with that societal reprimand that inevitably appears after anyone complains of unwanted sexual attention: just take it as a compliment. These stories make it clear that this attention is anything but a compliment.

I read this, and then unintentionally followed it up with watching Promising Young Woman. Both are somewhat bleak depictions of the reality of sexual assault. Both hammer home the unrelenting pervasiveness of sexual entitlement and sexual abuse. So while utterly depressing, there *is* something lightening about simply acknowledging the realities of the world we live in. Take it as a Compliment is more expansive and inclusive: addressing a variety of icky situations between all sexes and genders, while Promising Young Woman was more laser focused on the exploitation of women.

It was a pretty hard to read but damn am I glad I did. I want everyone who jokes about sexual assault or anyone who doesn’t take it seriously to read this book.

The art was wonderful and made the stories both more absorbing and more terrible (it felt like I was in the moment/scene as a bystander and could do nothing to help). I loved that it also provided tips in the back on how to help people who have suffered sexual assault.

Highly suggest this book!

Very important book. Please read.

And most definitely, a proper and very extensive rant review of this book.

“I hope he listened.”
