No denying she is a remarkable young woman, and I did enjoy her points on climate activism and indigenous justice, but the book itself lacked any real significant depth for me. She does something I think young people are prone to do—bring up a very complex problem but then explain it away with “I got over myself” or “life is a journey.” There’s just not a depth of wisdom to the narrative, which comes from being so young (imo). While she had some pretty descriptions, the writing itself was nothing particularly remarkable. Give me Birdgirl in about 20 years, and I think we will have something more substantial.

I didn’t know much at all about the author before picking up this memoir, just that the story revolved around birds, environmental work and mental health. That was all accurate. I found the main character’s passion for birds and work for conservation which both began at a very young age inspiring. I would have liked a more compelling hook, or something to drive the story forward but I was still glad to learn about this young woman and her family. I agree with what others have said about the birds being so vital to this story that this book really should have had full colour photos of the birds. I appreciated her candour about her mother’s mental health but sometimes found the different aspects of the story didn’t really come together to form as strong a narrative as they could have. I read some of this on paper and listened to some on audio and both versions worked. The author does a good job narrating the audiobook.

This book should be marketed as YA nonfiction - while the author tries to touch upon a lot of "adult subjects" she fails in her maturity and this book would be better marketed towards kids

This isn’t an objective 3.5 stars by any means. I really struggle with nonfiction books, so it’s not really the book’s/author’s fault. I hoped that my love of animals would help me focus and it did some (if it wasn’t about animals too I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish it). I found her story of birding along with her experience with her mentally ill mother interesting, but the very nonfiction way of writing it was not very compelling for me, a person who struggles to read nonfiction.
