Hard to review because it was a engaging book, had some interesting concepts with great audio production on the audiobook. I liked the concepts of default to truth, transparency and coupling. They were really interesting to learn about and make a lot of sense, it felt like we were building up to a conclusion but the case studies were never tied together and left me feeling shocked and uneasy. To completely disregard race, gender, class and power dynamics at play in all of these cases seems irresponsible and permissive. Without defining a stranger and without acknowledging the way these social miscommunications are amplified and exaggerated by things like race and gender was really disappointing.

I found the information covered in the book to be interesting and thought provoking. I also really enjoyed the way that the author chose to convey so much of the information through case studies and stories, as by relating it to these real-world situations made it that much more tangible. However, there is something about a white man speaking on racism and violence against women that definitely gives me pause. While I know that he is looking at research done by others it is all presented through his own lens, which doesn't necessarily discount it but does make me consider it through a more critical eye.

I listened to the audiobook and I would highly recommend that as a way to take in the content, especially if you are a podcast lover. It's incredibly well produced, splicing in audio clips in lieu of the author reading out a transcription of events wherever possible.

Really just couldn't get past the defense of rapists and shallow understanding of what respect is. Almost everything in this book up to where I finished will be triggering for several groups of people, and I didn't have to look him up to know the author was a cis white man because his take on most topics makes that clear, and not in a 'okay, that's you experience' way either. Won't be finishing.

While the topics discussed were engaging, im not really sure what the conclusions were supposed to be other than: you can't "read" a stranger because you know nothing about them, and people lie so be skeptical but not TOO skeptical or else society will crumble. The book made some good points, but overall was contradictory. Humans always "default to truth" and believe others, unless of course, those others are talking about sexual abuse, then we don't believe them at all. If I got anything out of this book, is that we should be skeptical. So I'm skeptical of this book.
