I can understand why all kinds of people--from sexually conservative readers, to feminists, to drama-free and emotionally mature folks who have a good head on their shoulders--would hate the book and the protagonist. What makes this book subversive is that Slimani challenges readers to empathize (or at least sympathize) with an anti-heroine who has major, toxic flaws.  It is clear that Adèle's passivity and compulsivity severely and adversely impacts her relationships with her son, her husband, and her friend. All of this is difficult and sometimes unbearable to read. But there is so much context around Adèle's behaviors and poor choices that I was reminded that even the most frustrating and hateful of characters
deserve some level of understanding and some loving as well.
