I think this is a story better suited to actual kids who will find it exciting and inspiring to hear how a boy ran away from NYC with basically nothing but the clothes on his back to live off the land in upstate NY. My husband and I read it together, but we couldn't suspend our disbelief enough to enjoy this in that way. We just kept saying, "But how did he do this, he didn't have x, y, z supplies" as the boy was happily skinning deer and tanning hides. I give the author credit for the fantastic atmosphere and nature writing, but we couldn't help being the cynical grownups in the room.

Re-reading this book after more than a decade was a real treat. it filled me with such joy. The Halloween chapter is probably my favorite Halloween thing that exists. I have few treasures I can hold onto from childhood. Feels good not to have to let go.

P.S.
I can't really express why, but the line "I ate a flower. It was not very good." strikes me as beautifully resonate, and I can't stop thinking about it.

For everyone with a wild(erness) side. For a little girl who dreamed of living in the mountains, living off the land, I adored this book. Kids seems to like to read about characters who get to experience those things we can only dream about. For me, this was one of those books.
