This book just didn't bring anything special to the table. We've read about witches, we've read about getting engaged to the prince and falling for his sister again, we've read about royals realizing their privilege and how they, too, have been exploited. We've read about
mentors who had to take parental roles dying
and
both sides showing their villainous traits
. This could've been redeemed with giving us something interesting to make the story stand out, be that beautiful writing or great characterisation but in the end, this will just end up in the trenches of stereotypical YA novels.

Ranka's story was a good one to tell with exciting moments along the way but I kept getting lost with the over-the-top violence and with what seemed missing to me. In a world of witches and magic, so little was explained about either. I spent scenes with the covens wondering what made them witches past their nails and enhanced senses. Additionally there were so many graphic deaths I wondered if there were even any citizens of Isodal left at the end. Overall a cute story but I wished for better world building.

I received this in a FairyLoot box.
"The Ones we Burn" follows Ranka, a woman who is tired of seeing all of the death and is ready to live out a quiet life with her coven. Unfortunately, and unexpectedly, she is named Bloodwinn, and she is forced to be the next bride of the human kingdom. She travels to Isodal to make her coven proud, but she quickly discovers there is something very sinister going on, as witches keep being discovered murdered.
I was just not invested in this story. I was bored throughout the novel, and never really connected with Ranka as a character, which is something I always appreciate, and need in fantasy books. I was excited by the premise, but ultimately, I was disappointed by the execution.
I will keep Rebecca Mix on my radar, but I am not too terribly interested in reading more from Rebecca at this time. I do think this book has an audience, and I encourage you to give it a read if it sounds appealing!
