Thoroughly enjoyable. It took me a while to put my finger on exactly why this wasn’t 5 stars but I think it has to do with how passive some of the ‘read the story within a story’ parts feel. It makes it harder to fall in love with the characters even though I felt like should have been obsessed. Still a very solid 4 stars.

It was just a really slow read. I wanted to like it, I wanted to push through it, but I have so many more books I’d rather be reading

We've all heard that when you open a book, you open a door to another world. January Scaller finds that to be all too true. I won't say much about the plot. There are plenty of synopses out there, and I don't want to give away any of the myriad of revelations contained within the pages. What I will say is that race and class are consistent themes throughout. They are addressed more than subtly, but not in a heavy-handed way. There are quite a few other themes explored with varying degrees of poignancy, too. The conflicts do tend to have nice, tidy solutions. To some, the plot could seem reiterative. To me, it created a consonance I very much enjoyed. January and the other characters know that stories are powerful things. And The Ten Thousand Doors of January is a powerful page-turner.
