I really loved Rowan and Aelin’s relationship and felt it was a nice change of pace compared to her past relationships in the books so far.

Spoiler I’m sooooo irritated that Soracha died, Aedion and Dorian have been captured, and yet Chaol gets to leave to find her???? Chaol sucks, like he is actively the person I care least about and now he’s in charge of saving them????? Can’t wait to see how that goes bc it’s giving redemption arc.

Though full of tropes and a healthy dose of one-dimensional thinking, I enjoyed this book so much. I’m fully hooked on this series now, especially with the introduction of new characters and more plot development and world-building. What a fun read, with great twists and stakes.

Compared to Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight, this book was more enjoyable. There's not quite as much focus on the weird love triangle between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian. And we learn a lot more about the witches and the fae, so obviously there is a lot more magic in this book.  There are some parts of the story that felt a little like the author was pulling at strings to get the plot to go where she needed it to go. A lot happens in this book and the POV switches between several characters. Usually this bothers me, but perhaps because I listened to the audiobook version, it didn't seem so jarring to switch POV because I was able to move through the story a lot faster than when I read text. The ending leaves you on a cliffhanger wondering what happens next.

You can tell this is SJM’s first series.

Other note: I just cannot buy in on Celaena/Aelin being the strong female protagonist that everyone says she is. I find her selfish, vapid, annoying, and hypocritical, with no ability to understand nuance or see a bigger picture outside herself. A 19-year-old will not make a strong queen. And I know (I've seen this film before) she and Rowan are mates, so don't even get me started on that.

I sincerely hope she gains perspective in the next book
