Slow burn. Took me a while to warm up to this one, but was engrossed from roughly the halfway point. Much more personal feeling work than similar dystopia-based novels such as 1984 or Brave New World.

Amikor ezeket a sorokat írtam, 10 éve (http://olvasonaplo.net/olvasonaplo/2007/05/04/margaret_atwood_a_szolgalolany_meseje/) még minden csak elképzelhetetlennek tűnt:

"Az egész könyvben az a legmegdöbbentőbb, hogy a történet alapján mai modern társadalmunkban élők (legalábbis a XX. század vége) alig pár év alatt képesek voltak teljesen megváltozni, új rendet, hitet, elveket követni, s birkamód. Azt hiszem, igazából az összes ilyen negatív utópiában ez az, amit egyszerre tartok elképzelhetetlennek (hogy én így, ilyet soha nem tennék, fogadkozom), ugyanakkor mélyen valóságosnak is, hogy tényleg bármikor megtörténhetne egy ilyen fordulat, mert mi az emberek bizony ilyenek vagyunk."
