A good introduction of the wizarding world. I dont like that people are autamatically bad because they are ambitous and clever. Overall a good childrens book.

I, like many others, have already seen all the Harry Potter movies. However, I've never read the books. I wish I had before seeing the movies so I could be a better judge of the book alone, but I didn't.
So it's hard to judge the imagery and being able to follow the story, etc. seeing as I've seen the movie. It has been quite some time since I've seen the movie, so that helped. But I tend to have some imagery from the movie, when really the book wasn't so detailed.
That was probably the first downfall of the book. I tried to judge this based on JUST the book. I'm the kind of reader that loves details. I love the author to paint a picture for me and for me to feel like I'm literally there. With this book though, I don't feel like that's really done as well as it could have.
There are things like the castle, the first feast at Hogwarts, the last battle scene between Harry and Quirrel, etc. that were just not described in much detail. This causes me to go back to the image from the movies, but the books were not so detailed. So that was a downfall in my mind.
Also, the last fight scene bugged me. It seemed really abrupt in the book. He blacks out and misses half of it. I wish we could have seen it from the third person. I also wish it would have been more descriptive.
Overall, this is a good, fast read. It kept my interest for the most part and I didn't have trouble getting through it. The reason I'm giving it three stars is because it could have been more descriptive in the scenes so that I could paint a better picture in my mind, and also it's not really my favorite genre. I LOVE fantasy. But normally I love romantic fantasy. So this is a bit different, being a book from a 11 year old's point of view. I can't really relate to the characters in that aspect.
But it's still a pretty good read and I'll continue on reading the others. I hope to have them all read before November when the first part of the last movie comes out.
