Even though I sort of saw the ending coming from a mile away, which is one of the main complaints I read in the reviews of this novel, I still thought it was absolutely fantastic. The fact that I wanted to keep reading, even knowing what direction it was heading, is just a testament to the fantastic story-telling ability that Dean Koontz has and his total command over this genre. Finding out all the little details along the way and not wanting to put the book down until I understood all the little factors and how they fit together made it a definite must-read!

This was on my bookshelf as a teen many decades ago. I remember enjoying the story, but not much else, and it wasn’t enough to make me a fan. I was always more of a Stephen King teen reader.

Great suspense and Dean Koontz knows how to make you KNOW a character. You come to love the cop in this story and the suspense is amazing.

An interesting premise but ultimately fell short. What was supposed to be building towards a twist ending I found predictable. I had guessed that twist ending not too far into the book. The characters were interesting enough to hold my attention but things just wrapped up a little too neat for my liking. Ultimately, this story was just okay.

Published in 1985, this book hasn’t aged well; subtle sexism and racism throughout, plus over-the-top horror and underwhelming awe of technology. Classic Koontz in that it’s a page-turner and an interesting concept, but I’d recommend sticking with his newer work.
