I heard this book described as "Game of Thrones for a younger audience." I don't really see it, it has some similarities in violence and plot points, but without the character development. I found this book to be boring, the characters were not well developed and I had no connection to them whatsoever.
SpoilerThe killing of the old king felt like it was ripped right out of GoT and I was like "really?" and I found the whole 'crazy young king' thing to be trite.
I honestly wouldn't recommend this as a fantasy read for preteens as there are much better books out there.
