lovely images and a simple story that gently speaks of death and birth; definitely teared up a bit with this one

A beautiful introduction to the delicate balance of joy and tragedy of life. Amazing and terrible things are ordinary and common. The world keeps going when everything changes, good or bad. What a powerful message for young readers.

I have FEELINGS about this book. Great conflicting feelings.

Pros: hooray for representation in books! All sorts of families and people are represented in this book and it makes me so happy! The illustrations are simple and gorgeous. This story did evoke big feelings in me.

Cons: extraordinary events happen in this book but are handled in a very ordinary manner. I’m not sure I’m okay with that. I needed....more, I guess, to deal with my feelings. It’s almost, almost, like it was blown off. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the author’s intent, but it just wasn’t enough for this empathic, care taking Hufflepuff.

This book took my breath away. It's stunning simplicity speaks volumes. It's amazing all that comes in a day. Even more poignet today.

I liked this book but I'm not entirely sure who it's *for*. Maybe for those kids who are going through that phase of curiosity about death, like many do. Maybe those who have to say goodbye to a pet, but the juxtaposition of birth and death might not be appreciated at the time... I could be wrong.

Read for Librarian Book Group

One street, two kids playing, two houses, two visitors, and Magnificent the Crow continuing her declarations about everything. This is how picture books are done!

I read this because I'm taking a class from the author in the fall and I wanted to learn more about her writing. This book is absolutely gorgeous. I knew nothing about it going in, and within the first few pages I was tearing up and it made me gasp with it's beauty and truth. We have all had that experience where something extraordinary is happening to us and yet life goes on around us as usual, and this book captures that feeling brilliantly.
