Down Don’t Bother Me is best described as a redneck hard boiled noir mystery. I follow Jason on twitter and he’s easily one of my top three favorite folks on that platform. A good tweeter doesn’t necessarily translate to a good novelist. But damn if Jason doesn’t pull it off. This book is so well plotted, the twists so well executed, that it’s hard to put it down. The characters are compelling and the central mystery starts off so simple but becomes twisty and complex by the end, in the grand tradition of a good mystery. It’s also laugh out loud funny but brutally violent. Imagine if the Coen brothers wrote a murder mystery set in a southern Illinois coal town and that’s what Down Don’t Bother Me is.

An engaging mystery with a strong sense of place and a well-drawn plot. I really enjoyed the narrator's strong and unique voice, and the diverse and interesting cast of characters who surround him. I'd read another book about these characters in a heartbeat!

Entertaining mystery. Read it more for the characters and incidents than the plot. That is not to say there is a thing lacking, sufficient twists and turns, though why no one wonders why a certain character is taken captive is a bit of a mystery. Fun and warm, reminiscent of The Hap and Leonard series
