I enjoyed the first half of this book but after the twist was revealed I think it lost its steam. The deceiving from characters got a bit too much, too. I couldn’t keep up.

Midnight Pleasures with a Scoundrel is a great final full novel in the Scoundrels of St. James series. Lorraine Heath once again blends angsty romance with mystery and intrigue in an expert way, making me root for these characters every step of the way. This one is perhaps the most self-contained of the series, although I would recommend the series overall for the recurring dynamics among the primary cast.
I didn’t know entirely what to expect what James Swindler, as while he’s been present in the other books, he wasn’t as vibrant as the others. I did think it was interesting to get his side of his relationship with Frannie, with him having been infatuated with her, while the others were more protective in a brotherly way. I also enjoyed learning more about his background, and how his life on the streets having his father’s execution led him to his current path as an inspector for Scotland Yard and working to fight for justice. While the “cop” characters can often be symbols of corruption, regardless of the genre, I like how he works against the system to help the most vulnerable and bring down the powerful and corrupt.
I was initially unsure how to discuss the plot twist where the FMC was concerned, but while the blurb calls her Eleanor, the St. James Character Guide on Lorraine Heath’s website calls her Emma. For the sake of consistency, I’ll use Emma, while noting that her identity is purposely written in a misleading way to serve the plot. And when I found out the twist as to why it was, and her motivations for doing so, I felt a little conflicted at the deception, but I also could not help but admire her bravery, and feel for her loss, and how she felt the need to take justice into her own hands.
And while the deception initially extended to James, once all things are sorted out, it’s clear how well-suited they are for each other, as both share a deep passion for justice for the innocent and vulnerable. This emotional connection is also complemented by a strong physical and sexual chemistry.
The intrigue and danger are high this time around, including a murder investigation and a dark secret society. I was just as intrigued in how that would all shake out as I was in the romance.
This was another brilliant book from Lorraine Heath, and I’m excited for what comes next with the next generation. If you’re interested in emotional historical romance with a dash of mystery, I’d recommend checking this one out!

I love a good bate and switch! This is the first book in this series where I feel the love interest is just as much a scoundrel as our main character. I found this book to be wholesome despite the plot revolving around murder. I didn’t love the double wedding, but I’m glad James is happy and realized Frankie wasn’t the only woman he could love.

In this historical romance set in the late Victorian era, Eleanor Watkins seeks revenge for his sister's death by killing the man who ruined her and drove her to commit suicide. While pursuing the brute, she meets James Swindler, a man seeking to atone for his childhood thievery, and their attraction is immediate. The rest of the story is full of plot twists that kept me off balance until the end. The ending was a bit too neat for me, but I really enjoyed the vividly drawn characters and the strong bonds of loyalty keeping them all together. Probably not the best writing, but worth it for the surprises and characters.

This could have been such an interesting story especially with the suspense element. Since Eleanor undertook this big task of avenging her sister, I thought she would be more headstrong. James being a distinguished police officer and an expert on catching criminals. I thought there would be more tension between them, more angst, a conflict between choosing between his heart and the law. Unfortunately that was not the case. They both fell so easily and it was lacklustre.

This was my least favorite of this series. The 1st half of the book was slow and really hard to be interested in. And the 2nd half just wasn’t as satisfying as the other books in this series.

This book was slow to start, directionless and I didn't care much for the romance before the twist. After the the twist, the story increased in pace, more indepth and a great "villan".
