This book is made up of several essays from multiple contributors. It is a companion to a temporary museum exhibit that was at Gilcrease Museum of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2017.

Some of the most interesting takeaways for me were how cotton and particularly calico clothing were essentially a political statement by the Cherokee who wore them during this time.

I also gained a better understanding of the structure of Cherokee society in the 1800s, particularly how the mixed blood elite of Park Hill may have been some of the most visible members of the Cherokee community but by no means representative of the whole.

I would definitely recommend it. I read it slowly, one essay at a time, but it’s a pretty short book. Plus the bandolier bag on the cover is stunning. 😍
