Blistered is the first book in A Modern Greek Myth series by Deidre Huesmann. It is a young adult adventure story- full of fantasy, action and drama- and has a unique spin on the Greek myths.
All Azalee has ever wanted was a home and a normal life- that is a dream though, and nothing like her actual reality. You see, when Azalee was born she was different from all the other townsfolk, and so she was outcast- then, during a ceremony to honour their God Helios, she was blistered and almost killed. Considered to be cursed by the God, she was locked up in an underground cell; she was only four years old- she has been there ever since. Azalee has lost hope of ever being released.
Joel grew up hearing whispered tales, telling of a cursed girl locked up in a dungeon under her parents’ house. He really believes that their fates are bound together and that somehow, it is his destiny to free her and help her get to Mykonos- an Island refuge for her kind. So he begins his quest to free her by- digging tunnels, until he reaches her.
When he appears in Azalee’s prison, she thinks it’s a trick of some kind and doesn’t want anything to do with him. He is able to finally convince her that he is genuine; and so their adventure begins, even though they aren’t sure of what they will encounter along the way- or what may await them on Mykonos.
Azalee is unable to withstand sunlight, so they will only be able to travel at night- complicating Joel’s plans considerably. As their journey progresses, Azalee is learning to trust Joel more and they begin to depend on one another.
The story gets even more interesting, when Niribelle enters the picture and joins the journey- she is a beautiful warrior who has been sent to ensure that Joel returns- well at least that’s the story she’s telling them. She starts flirting with Joel, disarming him completely. But Azalee doesn’t like or trust Niribelle- so this causes a lot of tension and bickering between them all.
This journey will test them all and push them to their limits, and it may be a quest just to survive this adventure.
This is a unique take on the Greek Myths we may have heard. It is well written, interesting and humorous. The author’s style is clear, detailed and easy to understand.
The characters are well developed and likeable. Joel is adorable- his faith that he will be able to help Azalee was infectious- he also made me laugh quite a lot. Azalee is sweet, I was heartbroken for her and how she had been so badly treated for the whole of her life. But, she is a lot stronger than she/or anyone else gives her credit for. I really want them to succeed.
The story has a great pace, flows well and was quick to read, as I read it in a day.
The story continues in the next book, which I am looking forward to reading.
Thank you Ms. Huesmann!

Azalee is a Chertz and is living in a land of Spinels and has been shunned all her life but more so after a ceremony to honour their Gods. It was at this ceremony that she was touched by the gods and given a curse. A curse that has seen her thrown into and held a prisoner in a deep dark dirt prison. Being touched by a god means she is the Blistered child kept in a dark prison because if she goes into the sunlight she will burn. All she wants is to live with love from her parents and live in a real home as part of a family with her brothers and sisters. Would it be too much to have a family, get to know her siblings and have friends?
Joel is a Spinel and and needs the light to thrive. Joel stumbles upon ancient writings and after many nights studying, he has discovered where the blistered one is meant to be. So after many years he decides he needs to be the one to rescue her so he sets about trying to free her. Joel feels like he will be fulfilling his destiny if he helps Azalee. He must gain her trust and trust is not something she gives freely. But is he trading one prison for another? One hell for another?
As complications arise Joel realises that he should have planned the needs for their adventure a little better than he has. As they journey together they realise all is not what it seems and that a friend is actually a foe. Secrets and lies only prove that Joel’s trust has been severely misplaced. Does Azalee finally find her freedom, friends and love? Will she finally have a family to call her own? Will she finally be free of all the deceit and lies?
This book is an interesting story with a unique mix of Greek mythology and current times. It is full of intrigue, mystery and definite surprises. This story is a fantasy that young adults will love.

I love Greek mythology. This was right up my alley. The writing was awesome and the author never gives too much away at any point. You're given enough detail about what is going on and upcoming events to keep you interested. I also love Azalee. She's so snarky, but it's really just a shield to keep from getting too close to others.
