When we left off in the last book, The Darkest Lie, Amun absorbed many demons when they ventured into hell to rescue Legion; and now he's going mad because of it. The Lords have no choice but to lock him up in his room in order to keep the darkness from spreading to others. An army of angels have come to guard over him and are threatening to kill him to keep everyone safe if they can't find a way to expel the demons (excluding Secrets) from him. In the meantime, Haidee, the hunter who long ago killed one of their friends, Baden (keeper of Distrust at the time), is being held prisoner by Strider. When both of their "prisons" become neighbors, they discover a surprising and powerful connection between them that is both undeniable and mind-boggling.

First going into this book I was extremely excited to learn more about Amun. He has been such a huge mystery throughout the series because of his inability to communicate through talking (due to the risk of letting out secrets his demon has discovered). So I was very much looking forward to getting to know the sexy and quiet demon. However, when it comes to Haidee, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to like her at all. In fact, I'll admit I was pretty set on hating her throughout the whole book. It actually kind of reminds me of the situation with Chase from Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole, in that I just could not see how this was going to work out with me liking this person.

But despite my initial hesitations, I actually ended up really like Haidee and understanding what happened all those years ago to make her do what she did. Obviously, I won't divulge what that is, you'll just have to read for yourself to find out. ;) But, I think Gena did a great job bringing Haidee's character into the light and enabling us to love a character who I'm sure most readers were set on hating from page one.

Now my one problem with this book is that it was lacking in the action department. Whereas the past several books have been moving towards a larger direction as a series, this one was kind of stagnant in that area. The entire book was really just about the romance; and almost all of the overlaying series plots were removed from this book. I'm not sure why that's the case and it was a bit of a disappointment not to learn more about the bigger picture at all. But, at the same time, Gena did a really good job of keeping me interested in the romance and still loving every page!

On the positive side, I loved the vacation between Strider, William, and Paris. That was just fun all around and I'm always laughing when William is on the page. Gotta love him! An interesting little thing happened for Paris on said vacation as well, and I'm really excited to see if we learn more about that in the next book (seeing as Paris' book is after Strider's). I also am loving the blooming relationship between Strider and Kaia.

Overall, another great book in the series. It's not my favorite in the series and I think that the action and bigger picture stories could have been drawn on a bit more. But despite those things, the romance between Amun and Haidee was both smoking hot and endearing at times. I'm looking forward to reading about Strider's story next. After all the emotional turmoil he went through in this book, he deserves his HEA next for sure!

Ok so this is the story of Amun and Haidee.

We have Haidee (who has changed her name from Hadiee) and has been mentioned in previous books as the woman who was the bait that led the hunter in killing Baden, the keeper for the demon Distrust.

Haidee we learn lost her family and her husband the demons. She herself was targeted by a demon and died. However each time she dies she is reanimated and finds herself in a cave with hate as her main feeling for the first few years. She has actively hunted demons since her second life. Each reanimation hurts her much more than dying.

Amun is the keeper of Secrets and has to communicate with his friends via sign language as if he tries to speak the secrets he has taken spill out. When he finds Haidee next to him when he comes lucid from being in hell, he is shocked to find that she can here his thoughts if he puts them in words. Something know one has been able to do before.

However the attraction between them is strong even when his demon rifles through her memories and find out her secrets, and her true past (killer of Baden).

With a quest into hell for Amun to get rid of the demons he has consumed, and Haidee having agreed to go, they find love and acceptance.

A wonderful book.

this was not anywhere ner my fav of the series. It's actually is my least fav. I still liked it but had to force myself to stay focused on it, I just don't know what was wrong with it but it didn't float my boat that well, but all in all I'm seriously awaiting Stryder's story.

This felt like somewhat of a down-shift in pacing compared to the last couple of books I've enjoyed of this series. The main couple were a little dull and the plot drawn out and overly long for the content. I'm not sure it even progressed the series in any way as there were no changes in the situation with the Hunters or the war.

There were a few things to enjoy, however. Amun was a surprisingly sweet guy and it was nice to get to know him a bit more since he has always been hiding in the background before now. And, of course, the smexy times were as hot as always. It was also quite nice not to have as much bitter resentment and distrust towards the female character at the beginning of the story. Amun is way to nice for that. Which is surprising, in a way, since the female in question this time is none other than Haidee, the female hunter that killed off Baden, one of the former Lords. Haidee herself was a very bland, 2D character, although she does have an interesting back story.

We kept cutting to Strider throughout, probably because his book is next. I honestly don't get why Showalter felt the need to make him interested in Haideeas well. That plot seemed to serve no purpose really since it all came to nothing in the end. And then the abrupt about turn with Kaia? Are we supposed to believe now that he really wanted her the whole time? If so, what up with the stripper, huh?

Here's hoping Strider's book is better. It should be since both he and Kaia are a lot more funny and entertaining.

This series is romantic and actiony. I think each book is better than the last. Though my favourite so far is Sabin's book. I think this one might be my next fav. Anyway this one is slightly more concentrated on the romance criteria rather than the action. And if you've been following the series you'll know that a lot of the other elements are missing buutttt it is still an amazingly fun and sexy read. Amun and Haidee are made for each other despite both their pasts, and how they react to each other.

SpoilerThere is this one character - Zacharel that is in this book who is an angel with a jar of love. I think Gena Showalter did and exceptionally good job with portraying his character. I have to say by the end I think I was beginning to love him too :P

Gena Showalter definitely redeemed herself in this one. Amun's story was SO GREAT! Book was fast paced throughout and came together well. Didn't expect things to go down the way they did at all.

I'm just so happy and relieved Amun finally got his HEA! (sigh)

New faves: Amun, Reyes, Aeron... in that order ;-)
