This was not a favorite. This was a very disjointed book with confusing timeline jumps that made it difficult to know what was happening at any given moment. It jumps from the Funmi, Zainab, and Enitan’s lives in college in Nigeria in the 80s to Funmi’s daughter Destiny’s wedding in the present. Although Dele and Destiny are in the book’s title but were both incredibly unforgettable characters. We didn’t learn enough about either to care about them. I hated that Enitan married a white RPCV because it maintains the white man plucking poor black women from Africa (and the eroticization of black women) trope. We also needed more of an explanation of Funmi’s potentially abusive and shady husband along with a more satisfying ending, it was too abrupt. I didn't really like the plot execution but I loved the relationships between the characters. It was real and didn't waver from reality.

Book #31 of 2023. Dele Weds Destiny by Tomi Obaro.

Funmi, Enitan and Zanab became friends while at university in Nigeria. They were three very different young ladies from very different backgrounds, but they became the best of friends. Life and the decisions they made took them in different directions (one married an American, one is wealthy and one has a sick husband) and they weren’t as close.

It’s been 30 years but now they’re together again for a wedding.  Funmi’s daughter, Destiny, is getting married and they’ve all gathered to celebrate.  Over the course of the festivities we learn about their lives together; how they parted and where life took each of them.  The author covered life, love, betrayal, heartbreak and enduring friendship beautifully.

This book represents what every Nigerian bride went through in the hands of their Nigerian mother during the weddings planning process. It also exposes a friendship that has been tested through time between three women.
