I loved the whole concept of this book but honestly I wanted the relationship to be more explored. It was kind of insta love and their relationship wasn't as developed as it could've been.

An honest review thanks to Netgalley. I love Barbara Ann Wright, fantasy with lesbian fiction together always makes a great read. If you love myths and more than that are ready to accept that yes they are real then this is the book for you. Cressida goes on an adventure to save her aunt deep in the underworld, but on her way everyone is drawn to her, she is living, something that the residence of the underworld hasn't seen in a long time.
Medusa, on the other hand, is trying to save her sisters from disappearing forever, and when she feels the presence of a live person, she rushes to get to her, as someone alive is the only person who can help her. The problem is that another person has already grabbed her, Medusa struggles to find a way to get Cressida to go with her. Throughout their journey in the Underworld, Medusa and Cressida fall in love, yet there are obstacles at every turn. There are a lot of surprises, laughs, and moments that you will want to read again and again. This is a fabulous book, and I cant wait to read it a second time.

This had a lot of potential but ended up a big miss for me. I enjoyed some of the twists and perspectives but it felt like Wright added so much that there was not enough time spent on some of the more complex issues. The other big miss for me is that most of the book ended up as a "tell" rather than "show" readers were told most of the feelings in the book by way of internal monologues but very little reinforcement via actions. Because of being told about emotional development, the pacing seemed incredibly off with the majority of action happening in the las 20% of the book.

I did enjoy the awkward main character's voice. And there were some attempts at humor actually made me chuckle. But I just can't shake the missed potential.

3,5 stars.

This was a really fun book even if it wasn't exactly for me - aka it was very plot/action-focused, to the point where when we reached the ~final battle~ I was just. v tired of it all. I'd have preferred more character-focused moments, but that's me. Also the romance has the "deception" trope which I just dont like/isnt my thing, even if I thought this book handled it p decently. What was REALLY fun in this book was how all the greek mythology was used, and how the author "updated" it to modern times. Plus, Cressida was just a really fun protag - the part at the beginning where Adonis tries to seduce her and she doesnt give a fuck but Medusa just has to appear and say hi for her to get all flustered was hilarious. me2, Cressida, me2.

Oh man I'm not sure how to review this book.

I have a weak spot for all things mythology and I love how it was spun with a modern twist. And if that wasn't enough the characters had me reeled in from the start. Sure there's some liberties taken with the mythological creatures, but in a good way. I really liked how well fleshed out( and more complex than you often get in most myths) most of them were.

Adonis trying to charm Cressida, the MC, while she was trying her best to not make a bumbling fool of herself in front of Medusa? Pure gold.

And what would this story be without a quest (or several)?
Spoiler Cressida leading their mismatched gang of dead people, (Medusa, Arachne, Pandora and Agamemnon) trough Tartarus looking for magical artifacts was a heap of fun and I just loved their interactions.

I wouldn't have minded if the romance part took up a little more space, but at the same time it was kind of always simmering in the back because they're both smitten idiots, so that was cute.

And the humorous writing had me chuckling right along with their dry wit and dumb flirting

All in all this was an entertaining ride from start to finish, and easily enjoyed even if your mythology knowledge is limited.

Adventure, humor and romance? Sign me the heck up
