A brilliant survey of the inextricable links between the rise of capitalism and the development of slavery, as well as resistance by slaves themselves to their situation.

This is a publication of Eric Williams' doctoral dissertation submitted to the Oxford University in 1938. Williams was somewhat ahead of his time in researching and documenting the role of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade in regards to British capitalism. Williams refrains from adding Britain to his title, as he feels the same characteristics of slavery and capitalism can be found in France and other societies involved in the slave trade. Williams also dedicates a chapter to the interconnectedness of capitalism and slavery in regards to the American Revolution, the Saint Domingue revolt, and industrialization.

This is not a long book, but it does pack a fair bit of information and should be a reference for anyone researching the transatlantic slave trade.

Very useful, but a bit above my level of expertise so it was very slow going for me. I plan to try again when I have time and energy to properly digest it.
