This book may be a little long, but the story is heartfelt. It is about a selfish king who wants presents and gifts from everybody. The one present he can’t have is a quilt from the lady in the mountains. She only makes quilts for people who can’t afford them. She tells the king give of yourself and I will make you a quilt. The king will not do this. Instead, he punishes the old lady and in turn just punishes himself. This book does have a happy ending and is simply lovely. The illustrations are classic, and so is the story. I see this book being handed down from “maker to “maker as they share the love conjunctions.

What a treasure. I love this book. Someone read it to my kids recently and they begged to get it. I already had it in my collection, but had never read it. (gulp). I loved it. It will be forever a family favorite, I'm sure. A story of giving and finding happiness in helping others.Gorgeous illustrations and the amateur quilt historian in me appreciates the great attention to detail in the patterns.

I reread this, and it's as sweet as I remember. And quite philosophical in moral ethics. It, above others, focuses on kindness and what will really bring joy into your life.

I grew up with my mom reading this book to me very often when I was tucked into bed. The art is beautiful and so is the story. It teaches valuable lessons about not being greedy and finding joy in other's happiness. This is a book every parent should read to their children.

Beautifully illustrated, every last page is so much fun to look at, I could go through this book for hours on end. Beyond that, the story itself is wonderful and has a strong, caring message about the power of kindness and humility.
