I was living in the Twin Cities during the George Floyd riots in 2020. While my Saint Paul neighborhood only had minor upset compared to Minneapolis, I still remember watching the national guard roll in on tv with tear gas and riot shields. I remember seeing the ashes of a neighborhood pharmacy and a strip mall, the broken windows of so many buildings. Thomas really captures the rage and fear of those moments after her main character Star, watches her 16 year old friend Khalil get gunned down by a white police officer mistakes a hairbrush for a gun. It is a beautiful and painful story about love and loss and racial tension, and what happens when affluent white police officers patrol areas they don't understand and how racial bias leads to violence again and again and again.

Une lecture essentielle sur des sujets sensibles, mais au combien importants.

La plume de l'autrice est juste, vrai et extrêmement puissante. La version audio est extrêmement bien livrée et la performance est poignante.

This book is incredible—timely, complex, doesn’t flinch. Amazing. Looking forward to reading more from Garden Heights and Angie Thomas ❤️

The Hate U Give has been sitting on my kindle for a good few years now. It was one of the oldest books I had on there. I bought it when I was in the middle of something else and so I just never got back to it. I've been making an effort to try and read some of the older stuff I have instead of constantly getting new things like a hoarder, so I finally took the plunge and read it.

And damn, it was worth it. While it took me a few days to get through, every time I sat down with it, it felt like I was reading long sections and powering through it because I just wanted to know what was happening next while also worrying about what might possibly happen.

This book is powerful. There's no other way to say it.
