Klune’s books are truly wonderful. They’re wholesome, comforting, sweet things to wrap yourself up in. His stories are about love and life, loss and grief, and what it is to be human. This book was no exception to this. Normally, I find myself reading YA books when I need something light and mindless for a break from heavier novels. But Klune’s work manages to be not only light and sweet, but profound at the same time. “Under the Whispering Door” was one of my favorite books that I read last year, and after loving this book too, I can’t wait to read more by this author.

The characters in this book were adorable! I definitely think Theodore is my favorite though. A little wyvern obsessed with buttons? Come on, it can’t get any cuter :)

Such an entrancing read! I couldn’t put it down, I loved the creativity of the magical elements and the parallel world. I imagined it to be the uk and Linus had a derry accent, not sure where I imagined the island to be but to book did an expert job of describing the area so I didn’t need to. I wasn’t aware of the influence of the book until halfway through but I tried to just read the book for what it was and I really enjoyed it, there was no mention of the “inspiration” in the book so I didn’t feel like it was actually trying to tell the story or glorify the history when I was reading it. It was nerve wracking, heart warming, funny, serious & heartbreaking. The love in the book was so genuine, I wish I could read it for the first time again!

I wish I could give it three and a half stars. I enjoyed the story and the characters in the book. I did not like the writing style. Instead of learning life lessons naturally throughout a book, it was like the author had a book of cliches, inspirational quotes, life lessons next to him and threw them in there word for word... All good life lessons, but hard to not roll your eyes after you repeat the same five or so cliches 4-5 times in the same book.
