I loved this book so so so so much as a kid and serendipitously had to reread it for work and it was such a joy.

Probably more like 3.5 stars. Slogged my way through the first half of the book and was really glad I did - the second half of the book really takes off. Great story of loss, love and redemption.

So interesting - it felt like I was in the same world as her husband's book Loud and Close (my abrev.). It felt so similar, that I can see why other reviewers made the same kind of comment. I did, however, enjoy the story. I found it a bit confusing at times and wondered if it was just me, but as I got closer to the end and figured it all out, I don't think the reader was necessarily expected to understand. The characters were wonderful and kept me interested throughout the story, but I'm not sure this book is for the average reader. Of course none of my friends on this site are average :-)

Oh, wow. This book provided ALL the feels. I was sad, I laughed, I was worried, it reminded me of my own feelings, and then the end came and it hit me hard. Ugh, so good. So sad. I really enjoyed this story. It was very well written, from multiple povs in various points of time. It all came together perfectly at the end. ♡

Fave quotes

"The plural of ELF is ELVES! What a language, what a world!"

"And then I thought, perhaps that is what it means to be a father. To teach your child to live without you. If so, no one was a greater father than I." 😭

"What was I supposed to say? I've waited my whole life for her? She was the opposite of death? And now I'm still here... waiting."

The title and cover was incredibly off putting to me and dodged many attempts to convince me to read it, but both Anna and Hazel loved it so much that I finally decided to get it from a used bookstore during my spring break visit to chicago. I read it obsessively in the mornings before Anna was awake in the living room of her co-op. I was incredibly sweet and heartbreaking. I love friendship :')
