💬: "It was exhausting to realise that everyone in the world knew he was an absolute fool for Jasmine Allen. He straightened his spine and ran a hand through his hair, suddenly realising that he must look a state—must look as out of control as he felt. And that wouldn’t do."

The Roommate Risk by Talia Hibbert is a contemporary romance and the second book in The Midnight Heat Collection, by the same author. The Roommate Risk is about two best friends, Jasmine and Rahul. Jasmine lives with a roommate but she soon finds out that her room and everything in it has been damaged if not destroyed because there was a major water leak in her bedroom. With nowhere to go, Jasmine contacts her best friend Rahul because she knows that his apartment has an open room and she hopes that she can rent it for a while. Little does Jasmine know that Rahul has been in love with her for the last 7 years of their lives together as best friends. Will Jasmine moving in complicate everything in the best or worst way?

I really enjoyed this story, it was romantic, sweet, and angsty. I love the chemistry between Rahul and Jasmine, I think they're cute together. They both have their own stuff that they're dealing with and the author does an okay job of depicting that with Rahul and an even better job depicting it with Jasmine. There was this really cute scene where Rahul takes Jasmine on a date and I couldn't stop smiling during that scene, it was just adorable and a little spicy. I think the only issue that I had with the story was a trope that takes place in the last part of the book, and it was basically
a third act break up but to continue to spoil things I will say that there IS an happily every after at the end so it all ends up working out. I understand why there was a break up near the end, because Jasmine had a lot of stuff she needed to sort through. I think it was a good choice to write in that she got a therapist and started working through her emotional and insecurity issues as well as her drinking problem.

The spicy scenes were really enjoyable. I might have really liked them because I dated someone in college with the same name and look as the main male character and memories were doin' their thing, but wow these spicy scenes were great. I'm giving the spicy scenes four chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️out of five chilies

I really enjoyed this novel, it made me smile and I definitely swooned over the main male character. I'm giving this 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is giving “Me to You” by Grace Enger, but not in a good way.  (With Rahul as the narrator/perspective of the song)

Age rating: 18+ (7 steamy chapters, 3/5🌶️)

This was by far my least favorite of Talia Hibbert’s books. I am just not a fan of “reformed player”/commitment-phobe trope in this instance, the FMC only sleeps around and she starts wanting the MMC again but only as friends-with-benefits even though she knows that’s not what he wants because he actually wants a relationship. She just can’t have both him as your best friend and casual hookups because he can’t be casual about you and you know that, so you can’t have both. She wants all of the benefits of dating (more than just hooking up) but not calling it that. There were just a lot of instances where she seemed cavalier with him and I didn’t love that. She was also just very emotionally unavailable, in my opinion, throughout the story. She also doesn’t seem like a very good friend in general, she can be quite selfish, self-centered, and flighty and it makes me so annoyed. Because of these issues with the dynamic between the FMC and the MMC, I didn’t really find myself rooting for her, and I was mostly just trying to finish the book, which was very disappointing for me. I’m not saying this book was bad at all, it was just very much not for me.

CW: grief, death of parent, alcoholism

Y’all, The Roommate Risk is hot 🥵 this was my second foray into Talia Hibbert’s writing and the first full length novel of hers that I’ve read, and it certainly did not disappoint.

The emotional growth that Jas goes through in this book is so good! We love a girl who gains self awareness and grows from her mistakes! We also love a man who cooks, and who knows first aid, and who is that hot between the sheets 🥵

I will say that I didn’t love how the beginning of this book felt a bit like insta-love. Once we got through more of the flashbacks it made more sense, but that’s not a trope I’m a fan of personally.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more by Talia Hibbert. 4 stars.

“Rahul didn't count himself certain of many things. There was his life plan, which could be summed up as study and succeed; his beloved family; his numbers, which would never deceive him. And now, apparently, he was also certain of the Jasmine Allen's brilliance.”

Talia Hibbert always writes the best steamy, swoonworthy romances! The Roommate Risk is definitely on the angsty side, as it follows best friends Rahul and Jasmine who have been pining for each other for years. Jasmine is a cynical, sassy young woman who is struggling with childhood trauma and abandonment, which causes her to avoid emotional vulnerability. Rahul has been whipped for Jasmine for years, but he knows her trust issues all too well and is afraid to ruin their long-standing friendship. When both of them have to become roommates, sexual tension runs high and they have to decide if they want to risk it all!

- Talia Hibbert is just so good at creating opposites attract characters, and THE ROOMMATE RISK is no exception. Jasmine and Rahul have explosive chemistry.
- I'll be honest, I didn't love that Rahul was sort of a nice guy/friendzone character. But he was such a good counterbalance to Jasmine that I could look past it for the most part.
- Hibbert also excels at giving characters real backstory - often tough ones - and exploring those experiences in a safe and loving way.

Talia Hibbert is a romance writing deity. I’ve absolutely loved four of five books I’ve read by her, and their skill in creating three-dimensional characters and sweet and steamy romances continues to astound me.

The Roommate Risk features friends to lovers, as well as plenty of pining and banter. I loved Jasmine and Rahul’s friendship, and seeing that evolve into a romance was such a treat. The chemistry between them is top tier, easily some of the best out of all the fictional couples that have stolen my heart over the years,

Not only did is there an epilogue in the book, but signing up for Talia’s newsletter gets you access to an additional bonus epilogue. I truly feel spoiled. Extra content is the best, especially when it’s romantic content.

I may or may not end up reading all of Talia’s backlist books as I wait for them to release more! And I definitely want to buy this book. I can’t help myself.
