3.5. Starts off a bit slow but lots of interesting information about whaling and Nantucket in the early 1800s. I appreciated that the author didn't try to make the book longer than it needed to be. It is written a bit more matter of factly than other narrative nonfiction stories that I think are punched up for entertainment, but there is enough to follow that you'll still be itching to turn the page in the middle part of the book. Not anywhere near as good as Endurance about Shackleton but still a wild story.

Hoo eee this was awesome. Superbly written and thrilling. This would make for a good read along as there are SO many facets to discuss.

One of the best nonfiction books I've ever read. Written in a beautiful narrative style and backed up with evidence. Truly awe-inspiring and brutal, despite it all my love for whales is only deepened from this tale!

Should have learned my lesson from Bunker Hill - US history just isn't my thing.
It was interesting and I finished it and didn't just abandon it but still not my favorite.

In typical Philbrick fashion, masterfully written.

Having spent a few of my years growing up in Connecticut, and familiar with the History of whaling, I was interested in this story. There were a lot of really interesting details and I thought the author brought the characters to life. I am now very motivated to read Moby Dick!
