I do not even have the proper words to describe how this book has made me feel. My heart hurts so deeply for these characters I knew for only a few hundred pages, for this family I know does not exist but whose pain I could feel emanating from the pages. Powerful words from an immensely skilled writer. I will not be quick to forget what I have read.
Graphic: Cancer, Child abuse, Death, Violence, Xenophobia, Abortion, Murder, and War
Moderate: Child death, Rape, Sexism, and Sexual assault
Minor: Vomit and Death of parent

While I didn’t love this novel the same way I loved Amman’s Golden Age, I do feel like this was a powerful and valuable return to her Bangla Desh characters. This is a book that explores the less dramatic, less heroic aspects of a war for independence - the fallout, the traumas, the grief and maybe most importantly, the disappointments. All while smoothly weaving in elements of Bangladeshi history to bring to a wider audience. I’m looking forward to reading the final book in this generational trilogy.
