“There are some things in life that we have to accept as truth, even though we don’t want to believe them. I know that.”

It was superb, unique, and sad. The Devotion of Suspect X is unlike any other whodunit mystery you encounter. Higashino revealed already the murderers, the accomplice and the crime scene in the first few chapters.
So how can Higashino expect the readers to be hooked until the end? It was the "how". How did they get away with the murders? How did they conceal the crime?

Short summary : Yasuko Hanaoka, a single mother to her only child - Misato Hanaoka, lives a quite life working in a Bento shop. Her ex-husband, Shinji Togashi, appeared one day and shattered their peaceful lives. Unfortunately, they killed him by accident. Then came their genius mathematician neighbor, Tetsuya Ishigami, who helped them conceal the crime (as he is secretly enamored to Yasuko).
Kusanagi, the detective in charge, thinks Yasuko is the suspect. He cannot prove it though, since she provided alibis on the said date of the murder, it was weak but it still a full proof.
Manabu Yukawa enter the scene. He is what they called, Detective Galileo, and frequently consults with Kusanagi as they are old friends.

"And, time and time again, we find that while we were happily swinging away at a problem, all the while we were completely off the mark. The police have fallen into that very trap. The bait was there and they took it, hook, line, and sinker.”

How do you hide a murder? By committing another murder.
That being said, you need to read the book to know what Ishigami really did and witness how brilliant he is. Of course it was all revealed by the amazing deduction of Yukawa. Truly both of them are masterpiece.

Hands down to Keigo Higashino.

"After all, if they hadn’t been there for him, he would no longer be alive. He was returning the greatest of favors. They certainly had no idea what they had done, but that was okay. Sometimes, all you had to do was exist in order to be someone’s savior."

Higashino wrapped it in a sad ending though.

Really unfortunately the Japaneses names made it hard for me to remember who was whom, and in particular I could not tell if names were masculine or feminine. I don't remember having this problem with other translated works (I've read and enjoyed a couple of Murakami novels), and I'm disappointed in myself that this was a problem for me. But also, the fact that the main character was a socially awkward, schlubby character who was practically stalking a poor single mother was a bit of a turn-off as well.
