The part between the climax and the ending made apparent how much he over explains what is happening. The dialogue or rather the story that Frank would tell was so drawn in but it would cut to keinji making a commentary about Japanese culture and that felt disjointed from the book. That hindered the flow of the story

This review may contain spoilers? I’m just going to kind of say what I think the point of this book is, because I’m not sure I fully get it. But I’m trying to make sense of it. To me it seems like a commentary on how we treat other people. In all kinds of ways. Frank is a foreigner-the word gaijin comes up a lot, i’m not sure if something is lost on me here as a stupid american- a foreigner in just about every way possible. He’s a foreigner in Japan, obviously, he makes himself unknown to those around him through the lies he tells, if we’re to believe his backstory, he was an outsider to his family and shunned from his hometown. He even became a foreigner to his own body (if we believe his story, which, as we get it through Kenji, he believes it anyway). I’m not entirely sure what to make of the graphic violence or a myriad of other things. I don’t want to take up too much space here though, and I fear I already have.

Horrifying and gruesome are good words to use, especially one part in particular. A commentary on the loneliness of regular people and their moral ambiguities. Frank is a terrifying character and the calmness and stoic nature of him makes him all the more creepy. Kenji is no saint either, he did not do the things that Frank did, but he was complicit in his actions. Though after experiencing something so traumatic, I don’t know what anyone would do, I suppose it was a matter or survival? All in all, an interesting book, it did what it set out to do, which is to horrify and intrigue the reader.

I have mixed feelings about this but I kind of liked how it deviated from the normal pace of a thriller. I liked the social and psychological themes explored from the angle of night life in japan. However, this book still falls into misogynistic tropes and is still a patriarchal point of view despite the author clearly trying to criticise the objectification of women in sex work.
