I started reading this for fun. I didn't expect to like it that much. It was amazing.

"This was another thing about being the new kid. There were common facts that friends and classmates knew about one another, things they’d picked up over the years without even realizing they were picking them up. They were just by-products of growing up together, and I suddenly felt a wave of loneliness, like I was always on the outside looking in."

I really enjoyed this book. I felt connected to both protagonists and, as well as loving the way their relationship developed, I loved seeing them both growing up and figuring things out about themselves and their futures. There are a lot of great side characters in here too and I particularly loved Valerie's relationship with her halmeoni. There's a great mixture of angst and sadness on the one hand and hopefulness and joy on the other, and this was just ultimately a really refreshing, wholesome read and an example of a really well-done YA romance and coming-of-age story.

Made in Korea is such a stellar read! Fans of Tweet Cute would definitely enjoy this. Pitched as Shark Tank meets Frankly in Love, two Korean teens with rival cosmetics businesses go head to head with an all or nothing bet. Along the way, they become more than rivals and learn how to follow their dreams.

Made in Korea centers Valerie Kwon, a headstrong teen girl running a business out of her and her cousin Charlie's lockers. They've been selling Korean beauty products to their classmates for years and they've only gotten more popular their senior year of high school. All of that changes when the new kid, Wes, accidentally spills a bunch of free kpop products his mother offered him to make friends at school. Thinking Wes is selling products, his classmates swarm him with money, which is when Wes makes the unfortunate decision to sell products to pay for music school - putting himself in Valerie's crosshairs.

Valerie and Wes become automatic rivals. With Valerie just seeing it as business and Wes taking it personally. there's no way their rivalry could ever become less hostile, much less friendly.
