Thorpe has an understanding people that I enjoy. These characters are just so lost in their hurts and desires and their attempts to make do with the circumstances life has dealt them.

QUICK TAKE: I f*cking loved THE KNOCKOUT QUEEN. The exploration of sex and violence and shame centered around 2 teenage outcasts (Michael, a gay goth and Bunny, an outgoing 6’3 female athlete) is dark and provocative and laugh-out-loud funny and packs a gut-punch of an ending that stuck with me days after I’d finished.

This was my Book of the Month because it sounded interesting, but like something I might not pick up otherwise. It was very unique, but I didn’t like how it went from being such a detailed account of a short period of time to glossing over several years at the end. The characters were very well-done and realistic, though.
