I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway. I was drawn to it initially because the heroine of the story was said to be similar to Lisbeth Salander from Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It is not necessary to have read the previous two books in this series in order to understand what's going on; that being said, I wish I had read them first because I think they might have explained more about what made the main character who she is now. Some of the characters could have been developed a bit more; also, I would have appreciated more sentence variety in the dialogue (much of the dialogue was a bit terse). It's a solid read--definitely worth checking out--and the subject matter (human sex trafficking) is interesting.

Vanessa Michael Monroe is a killer. She was taught to kill by a man in Africa, a long time ago. She fights against this darkness every day. She is in love with Miles Bradford, who tries to teach her to set aside this darkness. But, Bradford is helpless when he watches Michael get kidnapped. Her task is to transport a young Hollywood starlet to her new owner, who has purchased her through a human trafficking operation. The Doll Maker holds hostage one of the few people Michael loves and Logan will die is she does not do what she is tasked to do. Lots of bodies will fall and Michael will lose more of her humanity before everything is said and done.

Michael Munroe is a person that can get things done no matter what. She is a sometimes ruthless mercenary that hires out to solve the problem for those that need to work outside the normal society laws and process. In The Doll, because of this she is taken so that she can accomplish a mission for a group of people that are very far from the law. To ensure that she complies and will complete the mission, everyone she cares about is threatened. But what the group doesn't realize is that Munroe has a very dark past that will surface if she is pushed too far.

This series is very enjoyable and the main character, Vanessa Michael Munroe is a very interesting and troubled person. The stories feature her as she is faced with almost insurmountable odds and seems to find a way. The Doll is the third book in the series and it is still enjoyable. Recommend this series for fans of the action thriller novel.

This time they grabbed the wrong woman. Vanessa Michael Munroe is kidnapped in Dallas and awakes to find herself in a cell in an unknown location. A human trafficking operation wants her to make a delivery for them. If she doesn’t, someone close to her will die. It’s a tight spot. She’ll have to play along with her captors for the time being. But will she be able to escape without the death of innocent victims?

The first few chapters feature a somewhat understaffed private detective agency with incredible resources, which somewhat strains credibility, but as soon as Michael appears the action starts and doesn’t let up until the very end. All concerns about verisimilitude vanish in an adrenaline enhanced drive across Europe, while the A-Team back in Texas is taking care of the domestic side of a very ugly business. Lots of blood and bodies and excitement. You couldn’t ask for a better thriller.

I liked the expansion of Michael's world to explore not only her abilities, but the strengths and trials of her support system. It was an enjoyable and brisk read, but...

spoilers below

That said, I did not find it believable that Michael would compromise her values in order to save the life of one of her friends. She fully embraces keeping a woman in captivity and uses her physical and mental skills to maintain that captivity. It was extremely jarring compared to Michael's previous established moral code. She comes around in the end, but having her actively participate in the subjugation of an innocent life was gross.
