I, unfortunately, was not a fan. I can see the potential, however, I can see the world in which these stories, I Am Gotham, Night of the Monster Men (won’t be talking about here, as I have a separate review of it for the full story), I Am Suicide, and Rooftops were really exciting, where I can’t wait to turn the next page, THAT feeling, but we don’t live in that world. Instead, the first 15 issues are a moshposh of a lot of ideas, and they’re all annoying.

This edition ranges from the truly brilliant to the somewhat awful, with some good solid new characters in between. The introduction of the the Gotham siblings, Gotham and Gotham Girl, are good, solid comic book stories, with some hope for Batman to hand over the reigns to a new generation of heroes. The misguided (and only partially covered in this edition) Monster Men stories totally miss the mark and are just generally confusing. The I Am Suicide final chapters have one of Batman's finest soliloquies, and that is saying a lot for a hero who likes to soliloquize as a much as Batman. The Cat-woman romance is very well done -- with just the right edgy touches. And while the Bane showdown in Suicide is a good fight, the need to include Ventriloquist feels forced, and doesn't really make that much sense as an "aha" moment. All-in-all a great start to the Rebirth.

I'm impressed and really happy with the artwork and panel layouts (like, nobody does panel layouts like DC <3 but this is pretty impressive). I'm a little bit confused with the story tho. We'll see where this goes.

I'm a big fan of both Tom King's previous work and Batman, so I'm glad to finally be able to read this run in these deluxe collections. Snyder and Capullo's seminal run on Batman was easily my favourite thing of the New 52, and it is heartening to see King veer off in his own direction with the series. Overall, this is a decent collection (issues 1-15 of the run), but it lacks the fire of the other King content I've read.

My biggest gripe is with this collection is the horrendously cliche and truncated issues of The Monster Men crossover included here. You get part 1 and part 4 and a suggestion that you pick up a separate collection if you want the whole story. Riley Rosomo's art is nice to look at, but I was genuinely pissed off by the decision to include only the Batman main series issues in this collection.

As for the rest: well, it's good too! This is a bit different from the maxiseries of King's that I'd read in the past in that he is obviously laying the groundwork for a long run. I enjoyed his look at Bruce Wayne's psyche in this collection and am excited to see where he takes the series in the next collection. Michael Janin steals the show from an art perspective with some really unique layouts and kinetic splash pages. David Finch's art on the opening arc made the comic feel...old? I think having come from Capullo's expressive, cartoony art to Finch's more workman-like lines changes the vibe between creators in a very visual sense, but I'm just not a huge fan of Finch.

So, good but not the greatness I expected from King. Hoping the next volume picks up!

It's kind of hard to get a feel for this "Rebirth" thing from the single issues. I really want to like these comics, especially because a lot of the recent nu52 has been really lacking (ex: Batgirl of Burnside, Superman/Wonder Woman etc;). I'm going to read a few more issues here to see where it goes but right now it's way to early to say.

This book is pretty quintessentially a Batman comic it was pretty great, honestly. I loved seeing Duke have such a big role, and Gotham Girl is such a fantastic character. The big thing here really is the BATCAT, my two idiots are wonderful and perfect and love each other, it’s great and I can’t wait to see them get married.

This was not great. Mostly a "catch you up, what to expect," type of issue introducing the new King run. I'm hoping the actual issue #1 of the new Batman will be better. The art isn't really my thing and that has me worried. The story has a possibility but hoping that it gets more in-depth with the new run. You can probably skip this one and go straight to the Batman(2016) #1. Doesn't cover any of the reveal/story from DC Universe Rebirth.
