A River Enchanted was absolutely stunning, a perfect mix of coziness, mystery, and folklore. Rebecca Ross’ writing is so beautiful, I found myself so captivated by the magic, the island and the characters. I felt like I was reading an old fairytale, the magic and the lore was so rich and intriguing. I loved the presence of music and poetry in the world as well.

All of the characters in this story were so compelling as well. I adored Sidra and I thought Torin was such an interesting character. Sidra’s struggles with her faith and the journey she went on to heal her grief was so well done and impactful. I also really enjoyed watching grizzly Torin grow and change for the better.

I did love Jack and Adaira but I felt like Sidra and Torin’s relationship had more depth. I did like the juxtaposition of the two relationships, how Sidra and Torin grew to love each other so deeply despite their faults and initial arrangement. Whereas Adaira and Jack were always destined to be together in whatever capacity. I really hope to see Jack and Adaira’s relationship grow more in the next book, despite the challenges that lay before them.

Wow wow wow. Killer. I’m so grateful I came across this book because of an instagram post by another favorite author. Truly fantastical and enthralling. I’ll sing this book’s praises all year. Reads like this give new weight to a five star read.

Wonderful writing and great atmosphere, but the ending left more question than answers in a bad way
Spoiler The villain has the dumbest plan! Like genuinely…why did he think Cora was gonna like him after he kidnapped kids and she finds out that his mom left her in the woods to die as a baby????!!! It makes way more sense for her hate him and his mother then leave her home and live with them??

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I was an easy to digest fantasy, as the world was easy to understand and get accustomed to. I did wish the beginning had not gone quite as slowly, but once the book hit it's stride, I read most of it pretty quickly. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the series, as I've grown attached to all of these very distinct and well-constructed characters. My two biggest issues were 1. we got multiple perspectives, which fundamentally is fine, but some perspectives we got throughout the entire books, some only once or twice, and sometimes the shift in perspectives was a little clunky. But that's always a pet peeve of mine with multiple perspectives, so it probably won't bother most people. Also, I feel like this book is terribly mismarketed. The blurb makes it seem like Jack and Adaira's story, and while it is, it's also equally Torin and Sidra's story. We got their perspectives just as much if not more than the supposed main characters. And while it worked for the book, it was surprising as it wasn't what I was expecting. We barely saw Adaira for the first 100 pages. All that to say, I loved the characters and the story, despite it not being exactly what I was expecting, and I'm excited to see what happens in the rest of the series.

A great adult fantasy in a world inspired by Scottish culture & lore - there is love and magic, sorrow and joy, secrets and lies and truths that run bone-deep.
This was so good - 450+ pages read in a single week - and my only disappointment is that the 2nd book of the Elements of Cadence Duology isn't due out for nearly a year!!
