Raw, honest and heartfelt.
I loved Marina dearly and wanted desperately to protect her from the cruel world. I believe we all have a little bit of her in us, I definitely saw her in me and that is probably what gave me such a visceral reaction to her.
John Marsden does a beautiful job of constructing a broken 14 year old girl without making the whole thing totally unbearable or unbelievable.
It's not a super depressing book, it's tentatively hopeful. The main character, Marina never talks about self harm or drug abuse or anything, but simply emotional pain. The text is not gratuitous, but simply honest.
I would recommend this book to everyone, it is quite a fast read, I wasn't able to put it down and knocked it over in a few hours.

Fabulous book - I couldn't put it down. The scenes with the teacher's family were really lovely.

This was the 4th book I read out of the 12 books for 12 months recommended by friends.
It was.. okay, I guess. Interesting. But I always feel weird about authors making up stories about a real person. Idk.

Marina doesn't speak and is at a boarding school. She gradually reveals her story through this series of journal entries, including her relationships with her roommates and her family history, including her scarring as a result of acid her father attempted to throw over her mother.

A little but powerful book told through diary entries from a teenage girl who has stopped speaking because of something terrible that happened to her. As the story unfolds details about the situation are revealed culminating in a satisfying conclusion. This was a quick read, but at times it was difficult to keep characters straight and I wish some aspects were developed more.
