I found this book to be very expansive in the worldbuilding but not that enthralling plot wise, and seemed to get lost part of the way through. 

Im unsure it was so much about the magical abilities of Zachary, but more about the struggle of a parent to be present and do a good job, and the choices and risks taken to do that especially by yourself, and the accidental family you find along the way. 

I don't really understand the point of Tom being continuously misgendered by one character in particular, although I did appreciate the presence of a trans character who was respected for his skills and who found a happy ending. Perhaps the misgendering was a way by which the fact Tom is trans was kept present in the reader's mind? Who's to say. 

Overall, the book was enjoyable but I probably wouldn't recommend it to people.

Partially ported over from my now-abandoned Goodreads:
I cannot recommend this book enough! Really unique premise, super fun, the setting is rich and vibrant and beautifully described, the pacing held my attention all through (and what more could you ask for?) and best of all, there's queer people in it! (/hj). What's not to like? So glad I picked this one up! My only point to note, for some it may go on a little too long as the plot threads are tied up. Didn't bother me too much though.

Period-typical sexism is portrayed, but most main characters disagree with it and so does the narrative. The main character's mother dies in childbirth, it is not graphically described but it is dwelled on for a while. Those sensitive to deaths by illness should note that

another main character dies in a bubonic plague epidemic that occurs.

Those sensitive to description of injury should note that

the main character loses an eye as a child, in an incident which is described in detail that is graphic but not gratuitous. Also, at one point a main character is attacked and injured badly by a bear; the injuries are described but not in extreme detail. He appears later with an amputated arm, but the operation is not seen.

. A kidnapping is a main plot thread. Transphobia is minor and refuted by the narrative.
