A wonderful new cast of characters emerges as Gamache becomes head of the academy training young cadets. The academy has been devolving into a training ground for brutality and cruelty. Armand is trying to return dignity and virtue to the cadets, but he has an uphill battle.

Another fantastic Inspector Gamache mystery. Coming out of retirement to head the Sûreté Academy and to mold and inspire the future of the Sûreté du Quebec, Gamache finds himself in the middle of another murder, with himself as a suspect. Gamache's history has certainly led to having many enemies, but when one ends up murdered and Gamache acts out of character, what's the deal?
Again Ms. Penny takes us through twists and turns. Just when I thought I knew who the murderer was, the murderer acted and sounded so innocently, I truly believed it couldn't have been him/her. And then...it was!
The mysterious and angry Amelia, a new cadet at the Sûreté Academy made me wonder if she was an inside plant by Gamache's enemy or just an angry young woman. Her storyline and how it locks within Gamache's past was a perfect twist.
I only have one more to go before there are no more in the series (yet....). Hope Ms. Penny is busy writing #14 in the series!

Gamache has come out of retirement to deal with the poison at the root of the police academy. We've been wondering what the heck is going on with the new cadets and their terrible behavior and weird mindsets and Gamache is going to get to the bottom of it. I love the idea of Professor/Commander Gamache.
I had felt very uncertain about the direction of the series after How the Light Gets in. That was such a clear and neat ending of the original storyline. In A Great Reckoning Lousie Penny is 100% on her game. The story came together beautifully and I love the new characters we were able to meet. I can't wait to see more of them.
Gamache was still a total menace in regards to the extent he was involved in the investigation and how he toed that line between disrupting a police investigation and doing his job but it was expected and amusing.
I also enjoyed the way the map played into the story.
The actual reveal sequence was a little convoluted for how simple the motive actually was but it's not Louise Penny without a little bit of finger pointing.
I'm interested to see the shape the series will take from here.
