While I still really enjoyed reading this, it was just waaay too slow burn for me. And that’s saying something as a fan of nearly all the other books of hers I’ve read. Luna is a great character and seeing her interact with Rip and the other guys around her was great, but she screws herself over a lot by taking a lot of crap that she doesn’t have to. There’s a difference between patience and giving someone the benefit of the doubt because they might be having a bad day, and letting yourself be a punching bag. Luna allows people to cross the line and use her over and over again. I’m not saying I wanted her to be petty, but she needed to get a spine a lot sooner and stand up for herself. Build up her self-esteem. Her relationship with Rip also took waaaay too long to develop. We didn’t get to actually see them together until the very end, and that’s not what I want from a romance book. It was all build up with very little payoff. Overall, still enjoyed it, especially when Rip just refused to let her go it alone, but I wanted a lot more than I got from this over 600 page book.

Multiple times I had to close the book and take a pause to giggle, I no longer know who I am.

The Lord and all his angels know that I love me a good slow burn by my girl Zapata but halfway through this book it started to fall short of MZs previous books. Or maybe I just have on rose-colored glasses when it comes to her writing because this feeling of not being completely satisfied with her books is becoming the rule and not the exception. I felt like it was the basic plot of a lot of her other books. The main man is a jerk but he has liked the main heroine from the very beginning. Towards the end of the book, he reveals that and all previous wrongs are ignored and they live a HEA of my dreams. It was great at first when I didn't know MZs shtick but now it’s become expected... there are more reasons than a guy being bristly and short-tempered for why a love story can not be insta-lovey.

In this book, there were good parts of course. Parts where I felt supremely sorry for the predicaments and places the main character, Luna, was plopped down in. Places where I squealed with excitement or laughed because of an interaction with Lucas Ripley, our main guy, that had gone well. But there were also parts that I didn't like as much. I felt for Luna and slightly identified with her because I have trust issues too. I don't like to give love if it is not going to be received well. And Rip being so wishy-washy and cruel to her drove me crazy. one minute I was over the moon because he called her baby girl and driving her to someplace 3 hours away from Houston the next moment I would be pissed because he has a definite anger problem. There also like every MZ book was a pacing problem... the book was like 500 pages and didn't need to be.

I don't know. I think I will always love reading her books and immediately put any book that she writes in my TBR pile but sadly they are starting to lose their shine.
