I loved everything about this book. The storytelling was fascinating and the story was just perfect. Plus, this scientist's heart is happy because the author got all the science stuff right!

An excellent book! If you enjoy folktales and storytelling and a heart, wrenching family saga, then I highly recommend you read this book! I cried more than once, and I can honestly say I’ve never read anything quite like it!! It’s not perfect, and there is definitely some plot holes, but to me this book is more about the characters and their love for one another. My only other main critique, is that the story is left open ended and as of right now there doesn’t seem to be a sequel, but hopefully in the future.
PS the audiobook was fantastic!

Just finished reading this book, I don't quite know what I feel about it yet. I think I need to sit with it for a little bit. I am reading it for a Newberry

I enjoyed this fantasy (or was it science fiction?) story mainly because the author does a nice job of developing the main character so that you end up cheering her on during her difficult quest. Parts of this story read like 1984 with the powerful Collective controlling her every move and thought. I am not sure I fully appreciated the side story of her wanting to be a story teller. Other than it did provide a nice connection between her past and unknown future. I'd recommend this book to readers 12 and older as it does have some mature themes such as purging human beings that don't follow the edicts of those in control.
