I highly recommend this just for the themes explored in these short stories.

Audiobook Review

CW/TW: beheading, ableist slurs, animal gore, blood, swords, knives, hunting, gore, death, injury, poisoning, pregnancy problems, sexual harassment/assault, child abuse, menstrual blood mention, violence, illness, infidelity, threats of war, description of wound, war, kidnapping, non-explicit sex

1. I really like these stories a lot despite the issues that they have. And I like that I can recognise the story with the show. I like the writing style and how well fairy-tales I recognised are incorporated into the story and make it feel like they naturally fit into this story. I like Dandelion, he's definitely my favourite character, and I love that he always just somehow shows up out of nowhere and just joins Geralt, he keeps it moving.

2. The PoC are described as a savage race and I don't like that, because most of the characters that are introduced are described as white people and there's this imagery of them being civilised even if they make bad choices and Geralt feels contempt for them. Even when they talk of war, there isn't that level of 'savage race' imagery like with Véa and Téa.

3. There are a lot of men in this book, holy shit. Literally the only women who get decent roles are Yennefer and Little Eye who mostly serve as love interests. There's story about them, of course, but more than anything they're just there to push Geralt's story forward and I am hoping that when we get to the main story there'll be more women, and they won't just be mentioned as love interest. I want more women with urgency, with more characterisation, I want them to be their own people outside of the men that want/love them. Even the mermaid character is there mostly as a love interests who sacrifises the sea (??) for her bad-decision-making male love interest.

4. I need more female characters playing prominent roles that don't involve them fighting for a man, and that happens a lot in this book and I'm not into it. It's not taking away my enjoyment if the book though, because I like the writing style and the narrator is doing a really good job with the voices and storytelling, it's very engaging. I just want more from the female characters!

5. My favourite story out if then all is 'A Little Sacrifise', I think that one is sitting at a five (5) stars, or maybe a 4.5 (four point five). I loved the story of Geralt and Little Eye, the complication of the Witcher with no feelings and the girl who pretty much wears her heart on her sleeve. It works beautifully as a short story (usually I want more if I love a story, but this one is perfect as a short story). The way it concludes is sad, but it wraps up what was building up so well.

6. Again, I'll repeat, I really like how Sapkowski writes, I like how the words flow naturally and things aren't overly complicated. I'm not going to judge the world building too much because I am hoping that when I get to the main books things will become more clear and the world building will be done a lot more there, because right now it feels like it's working on an already established world. I like it though, because despite it being fantasy, it's not overly complicated and one can understand it without having been bombarded with information.

7. The book is good, I enjoyed it, but by the time it got to the end I was tired. I didn't want to DNF it, which thank goodness, but by the end it kind of felt draggy for some reason and I was taking forever to finish it. But I did and I enjoyed it and I can see all the scenes from the show in this book. I'm actually excited to get to the main books now and can't wait to see what it's all about!

‘Here, kitty, kitty,’ the Witcher said. The cat stopped what it was doing and looked at him malevolently, flattened its ears and hissed, baring its little fangs. ‘I know,’ Geralt nodded. ‘I don’t like you either. I’m only joking.’

Definitely enjoyable. Parts were confusing when I wasn't sure if Geralt was dreaming or it was a flashback or what, but I'm hoping the books that are part of the series (not just short stories) will be easier to follow. Looking forward to it!

some of the short stories were really good, some were a flop for me. i preferred the first book.

i loved meeting ciri and seeing how her and gerald formed a bond. i loved meeting new creatures and exploring new parts of the world.
