2.5 stars.

ugh, i'm so disappointed by this! i loved the previous two books in the series, but this one just not my cup of tea. i will start this off by saying i think the reason i didn't click with this one as much as the other two is that there were a lot of cultural gaps i just didn't understand, and that's completely on me. i spent most of the book confused by dev and jia's relationship, because so much of it felt overdramatic and their reasons for "faking" a relationship felt really weak to me? also, even though this is supposed to be a comedy of errors type book, the situations dev and jia find themselves in were just a bit too over-the-top, to the point where it became grating rather than funny.

i will say though, i will always love alisha rai's writing style! even though this took me a bit longer to read than the other two, i still love the ease of rai's writing and how her books are great if you're looking to get away from the real world for a little bit. (seriously, seeing this book take place in a post-covid world was weirdly relaxing? like it was a reminder one day we can and will get back to a somewhat normal everyday, even if it's gonna take a few years).

overall, this one didn't work for me, but i'll definitely read anything alisha rai writes in the future :)

This book had a strong start but it started to fall apart at 60%.

I rage finished it, and found nothing that could salvage it.

Thank you to William Morrow, Harper Audio, and Libro.fm for the ALC copy of this book.

This is the first in Rai’s series of modern romance novels that I read. It felt modern and fresh, blending conservative families and traditional values with the progressive backdrop of LA and a social media career. Sweet read with characters I rooted for the whole time.

The book itself is very charming! It's fairly tame as far as romances go, and I don't mean that as a dig at the story. Just wanted to mention it because it might be a good option if you have older kids who are interested in reading romance novels.

I did run into some issues with the audiobook, though. I like that the author has the different segments of the book narrated by voice actors meant to be the two main characters. It's usually a conceit that I really find charming. Unfortunately, though, the voice actor reading the Jia side of the story pronounced the male lead character's name as "Dave" instead of "Dev" *the whole time.* It really took me out of the story to hear the voice actor reading Dev's side of the story pronouncing it correctly, and the other voice actor pronounced it completely differently. I'm familiar with the name Dev, but apparently the female voice actor was not.
