This is the third book in the Rivers of London contemporary fantasy-mystery series. This review assumes you've read the first two books.

In this outing, Police Constable Peter is reunited with his colleague Leslie, who now hides her face behind a mask. The book starts out with Peter checking out a ghost sighting by young Abigail, whom we've met before. Later, Peter is called to the scene of a suspicious death of the son of a US senator--are there signs of magic?

Peter's usual trials of mastering his magic and hiding the magical world from the public are made more difficult by the presence of FBI agent Kimberly Reynolds, who is dispatched to London to help solve the murder. Peter's investigation leads him to a secret society, takes him into the London sewer system (yuck!), and introduces him to the Quiet People who live below the city streets. As always, Peter must deal with a river god or two, this time the teenage twin daughters of Mama Thames. Poor guy, he may have gotten himself in debt to one of the princesses. Yikes!

I loved seeing Leslie back in action and was happy to see familiar characters. Peter's creative use of magic is always a treat. I think Peter's relationship with the curious and persistent Abigail is sweet, and I'm glad the book ends with the promise of seeing more of her.

If you're so inclined, give the audiobooks a try. I can't say enough good things about Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. He's fantastic--perfect timing and perfect delivery of the humor all while capturing the characters' personalities and emotions, rendering consistent and believable accents, and keeping the  action moving. Audiobook lovers are in for a treat.

Audiobook from my personal library.

Great characters and dialogue plus urban legends and history made this a really entertaining read. A couple of
minor non-sequiturs in the descriptions didn't really distract. Fast paced, kept you hooked.

Compared to others in this series it’s probably more like a 4.25, but there’s something about this series I love so much. That something, whatever it is, still makes this feel like a 5 star anyway.

Still a great story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Just enough majic to make it interesting. Just enough reality to keep it real.
