Long-held secrets, mystical realms, and one stubborn young lady who is more than she seems. If you enjoy a well-written fantasy story, Feathers and Fae is worth the read.

When a banished evil who goes by the name of Aseth returns, intent on regaining the power he once had, Emmett exercises some of his magic - a well-kept secret until that moment - to protect his friend Kami. But his magic does more than he expected and the two find themselves in a different realm called Mythos, a place of magic and creatures Kami thought only existed in books. As they seek passage back to the realm where Earth is contained, Emmett finds it more and more difficult to keep secrets from Kami. Being in Mythos has somehow given her the ability to sense when someone is lying to her and she quickly figures out that all is not as she has believed it to be.

As their situation becomes more dangerous and Aseth draws closer, Emmett has no choice but to tell Kami the whole truth. Can they stop Aseth once and for all? Or will all of Emmett's attempts to keep Kami safe end in failure?

The characters were very well-developed and the relationship between Kami and Emmett was just what you would expect from two people who were supposed to be lifelong friends. When Kami is able to sense Emmett's lies, the tension between them adds a measure of intensity to the story, especially when Aseth is practically on top of them! Even when everything seems hopeless the reader can't help but root for these two and the friends who help them. The ONLY thing I was missing was more detail in the world-building. That lack may have been due to the fact that the characters were on a journey that took them through a few different regions of Mythos. Whatever the cause, I struggled to visualize the world as a whole but it wasn't enough to detract from the enjoyment of the story!

This was an average read for me. I received an advance review copy for free from Booksirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I felt myself getting annoyed at repeated dialogue and at Kami’s character; this balanced out as a 3 star rating with the ending. My favourite part of the book was as it was drawing to its conclusion: I felt the excitement and anticipation that I felt like I missed out on in the prior chapters. Maybe this was because the plot was predictable.

However, as the narrative came to its conclusion, Kami didn’t annoy me as much as she initially did; out of the Kami and Emmett duo, Emmett is by far my favourite.

Overall, the world building is AMAZING but the writing style lets it down, which is disappointing because I KNOW this book series/universe has so much potential.

This book, Feathers and Fae, was a bit disappointing for me. It took me a little while to think about it and pinpoint what I liked and didn't like about it.

So, Emmett and Kami are best friends and have been all their lives, but it starts out they're walking home and suddenly things start happening, but it was a bit abrupt how we were thrown into the story. Anyway, so they end up suddenly in the world of mythos - basically a mythic world where all the fantasy creatures live and they have to find a way back home to Earth.

They have to go talk to a Seer to get help and she has the supplies and is all ready to go on the trip and guide them cause she's a Seer, but it seemed a bit too easy with how she was there and everything fell into place. Then Kami suddenly has a new ability as a human lie detector so she knows Emmett is lying to her about who she is and everything about himself and such.

As they go on their journey, some things happen and they keep coming back to Emmett and Kami going back and forth because Emmett is keeping secrets from her about who he is and what's going on. Emmett does come out and tell them about the dark fae, Erlking, who's coming after them because Emmett has something that the Erlking believes belongs to him.

Then they come across and add a new member to their group, a yeti, who's willing, available and ready to join their group with no problem and help them out in getting back to earth and getting away/fighting the Erlking. They also know by this point that Emmett is an angel - well, The Seer, Jewel, and Kami know and soon after the Yeti joins, he finds out as well.

As the story goes, we find out that Emmett is an angel or rather, basically, he is Kami's guardian angel and trying to protect her from the Erlking and get them/her safely back to Earth.

It comes out more about all the specifics about who Kami is, what kind of angel/guardian angel Emmett is, what happened in a previous war and situations in the past with Emmett, Kami, and the Erlking.

I just personally didn't like this too much. This story bothered me, partially because I don't like angel stories especially guardian angel stories like this. Also, there were things that either didn't make sense or seemed too simple and easy how things happened. I was left wondering a lot and had unanswered questions that seemed like they should have been answered that were important to the plot or character stories so take what you will from my thoughts on the book.

Emmett and Kami have been best friends their whole lives, so when Kami finds out that Emmett's been keeping secrets she's NOT happy.

Just like Kami, the reader is also kept in the dark about all the secrets. It's only natural that it takes some time to get in to a new world and what it contains, but I feel as frustrated as Kami and I understand her annoyance with Emmett. Though, after a while I'm just as annoyed with Kami... She doesn't seem to think about ramifications at all, and it's her way or the high way, more or less.

The world building is interesting and multifaceted, but it's inhabited by a lot of different creatures: angels, fae, dwarfs, elves, yetis, giants... It's too much of a good thing, really. On top of that the author seems to have a fondness for details and descriptions of the obvious. It became quite tiresome. Good premiss, but not as well executed, in my opinion. A lot of typos too, I'm afraid.

* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review *

An amazing fantasy world!
High Fantasy is not my typical read, but I must say the world building in this story was fantastical. The details and descriptions were amazing. The creatures were strange, endearing, and scary as hell. The writing really brought you along on their journey. I enjoyed most of the characters, especially Emmett. He was strong, caring, and deeply loyal. Kami on the other hand made me want to reach through the pages and slap her silly sometimes, but she eventually grew on me.
If you love high fantasy with immense and detailed mythical worlds with characters enduring wild adventures, then you will love this book.

Would enjoy listening to this book as an audiobook as there are so many unusual words that I have no idea how to pronounce. A lot happening in this book, but it did repeat things quite a bit. Felt Kami had a lot of patience I would have lost it with the secrets that were being kept from her. Liked the prologue which tied everything up nicely.

I was provided with an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Feathers and Fae isn’t a bad book, just one that I found disappointing. It could be the first book in a series, but it could also be a stand-alone. If it is the first in a series, that would explain why the plot seems to revolve around building the world rather than the main conflict. I feel like the story is actually two stories that are weakly linked together. There’s the story of Emmett and Kami trying to get back to their own realm. And there’s the story of Kami, Emmett and their companions trying to defeat the Erlkrönig. If the author had chosen the first, it could’ve been good. If she’s chosen the second, it would’ve had potential. Instead, she chose both and I don't think it works as well as it could've.
