An interesting story of a totally abandoned girl who through her experiences grows in confidence. Life in medieval England provides a colorful backdrop to the main character’s journey to a better life. This is a fairly short book that makes me wonder what the author could have done to fill up more pages. I’d recommend this book to any reader over 12 years old due to the child birthing details.

Read for Adolescent Literature class. Enjoyed it greatly, but not my favorite historical fiction. Good for young readers just getting into historical fiction, though.

Now I'm going down the Karen Cushman rabbit hole.
I am 52 years old and just about all I can read anymore are middle school books.
Lack of time, attention span, or regressive disorder?

You decide.

This book was good and just what I needed. I love Alyce.

This book was okay - it provided an interesting, albeit raw, depiction of what giving birth was like in the Middle Ages (I have a renewed appreciation of drugs, hospitals and doctors now), but I just could not seem to fully get into this book - I didn't get too attached to the main character(s) and sometimes had trouble concentrating on the storyline.

Are you kidding me? She saved a boys life and he still turns around and continues being a cruel bully? Yes she's a good person and all but most of the people I couldn't stand in this book and dnf'd at 45 pages. 2.5 ⭐.

TW: child abuse, light swearing, bullying, starvation, and abuse of a cat.

Short and sweet, but definitely not sappy. This had a surprising little message of valuing yourself for what you are, and knowing that you have worth in the world.
