4.5 stars rounded up. 1 gripe and few minor gripes. Minor gripe: the first half felt musical chairs with people falling in and out of various groups and showing up to the same tavern moments after group 1 just left. Also some of the most vile characters seem to be given the 80s buddy cop treatment where people wryly smile at a character essentially saying “oh she is incorrigible” and I’m like “she literally ripped peoples fingers off and tortured people for 2 1/2 books!”…major gripe is the plot armor. Some character will not die. They can get stabbed in the face, lose an arm and have a building fall on them and they show up later like woah that was a sticky situation. One guy gets stabbed in the throat, has his arm chopped off, and still bests 3 armed soldiers at the same time… that said when someone does die it’s a crazy shock because they’d escaped death 4 times before.

Even with those nitpicks, this series is a top 10 all star (would have been top 5 for sure) and I’m having a massive book hangover now that it’s all said and done.

This was one wild ride! Durfee, in the tradition of writers like George R.R. Martin, isn't afraid to dispatch characters you thought were untouchable. So, that caused the battle scenes to take on a higher level of stress. You really have no idea what is going to happen next!

There are a couple of reasons why I didn't give this a 5/5. First one character, for reasons I am not sure of, decides to just start killing everyone during the final battle. I mean everyone. They just seem to snap. It didn't match how the character behaved previously. I don't know. Maybe that could happen.

Speaking of the final battle. The thing went on forever. It did suck me in, however. I read the last 200 pages in one sitting.

I think Durfee left it open for a sequel if he so chooses. I would definitely be in!

This last book was just a mash up. I was finished at around 600 pages, but kept going only because I had got this far.

If you like battle scenes either lots of violence, this might be got you.

A disappointing ending to a series that otherwise was quite good.
