Recently reread this after having read it years ago as a kid. It held up surprisingly well. It is a fun little romp, with Watson trying to protect the last scion of a family from the hell-hound that's supposed to have cursed his ancestors for two hundred years. The setting is moody and heavy, with the plot offering with one good red herring, some eccentric minor characters. However, it is a 19th work, and may seem unsophisticated. It also contains some outmoded language. But all in all, just a whole lot of fun.

This was way more fun and engaging then I anticipated!
And John and Sherlock ARE in love. They don’t even try to hide it

I think what makes this work so much better than the previous Holmes books is that Doyle is so much stronger in the voices of Holmes and Watson than in those of other characters, and he made the choice not to digress to the POV of a different character in this book.
