Exceptional read. Crichton's medical school background truly shines in this book. Not only do you feel the fear of the characters of the book, but fear in real life of the possible reality of this. With special emphasis on the main antagonist hubris. Crichton created a story that is well-developed. I feel the characters are unique and have different driving forces. I don't think that the children's plots were as realistic, but them being a hindrance was very well-written. The story itself is also resonant, and it is a timeless classic. Have read it before, will read it again.

I watched the movie a couple of years back when my cousin was obsessed with it. I enjoyed this more than I remember enjoying the movie, but they are rather different! I really liked the focus on science and technology (which was nit in the movie). I loved the palaeontology aspects. Although the science isn't perfect (some is definitely no longer quite accurate) a surprising amount of it has also held up relatively well. (Yes, yes there's the scifi elements but beyond that!) I will say that a lot of the characters were rather frustrating but I still had a great time with this one! The setting and dinosaurs make up for it. I have picked up the sequel from the library and am excited to keep reading about the dinos!

The moral of the story is super strong and resonant. The book doesn't offer any solutions to problems in the world, but it makes you wonder about the balance of new discoveries and technologies and how much net good they do. The author also did a great job taking a jab at the disastrous effects that arise from large companies cutting corners.

The action sequences were really exciting, which is the majority of the book so that is great. I also really love how grounded the book was. I loved all of the schematics, the computer code, and how granular the author was about the obstacles the characters were facing.

My struggle with this book is how good the movie is. I was really affected by the visuals and the John Williams score, and I missed that sense of wonder the main characters experienced upon seeing the dinos for the first time. I realize that is kind of the point; the horror and uncertainty these animals instills in people is opposite from John Hammond's expectations. But come on! It's dinosaurs! 🦖 That and the pacing of the ending was a little weird. There was so much action for so long, and the resolution in the end didn't match my expectation for how high stakes all the action was.

Crichton is really good at creating tension, so I kinda wish he had stuck to that instead of writing in all the scientific explanation... I'm not a geneticist, but I found myself going "I don't think that's how that works..." several times. I'm going to re-watch the movie to see if I enjoy it as much as I did all those years ago.

The only reason I am not giving this a 5 star like I originally thought is because of Ian Malcolm (IYKYK). Overall though I really enjoyed this book. I like the book better than the movie and that isn't always the case for me. I defiantly recommend it if you like sci-fi and dinosaurs.
