This is a case where the movie ruined the book for me. I understand why Lex was written the way they were but I absolutely hated reading anything they were doing. I found none of the characters charming and aside from the very violent scenes I was a bit bored. This was not a hit for me and I usually prefer stories that are slower to the scare.

It was fun to read the book that started all the movies. It was a good read and it was interesting to know what was the same and what changed for the films.

A classic of horror, survival, and teeth.

A cautionary tale about the dangers of genetic engineering: Jurassic Park thrills and terrifies its characters and readers alike when dinosaurs are genetically cloned and recreated in the modern world and those in charge of the park overestimate their ability to control them.

I loved the movie and finally decided to pick up the book, which I enjoyed just as much. It was a fun time picking out which parts of the novel were used in the movies! I also really enjoyed the more in-depth science talk in the book that we missed out on in the movie. It was still digestible for the average reader and fun to think about. The encounters with the dinosaurs felt harrowing and easily my favorite scenes to read.

The book is plot-driven first and foremost. It’s slow in the beginning with frequent jumps from character to character as events take place, putting the reader at the forefront of the action wherever it is. The characters were introduced fairly quickly with brief glimpses into their lives before going to the park. However, the characters do come off as somewhat one-dimensional with no big changes in who they are by the time the story is over. The likable characters were still very likable by the end, and when the unlikeable characters didn’t make it, I wasn’t too heartbroken over their deaths.

I’ll also say that the book is of its time, and I was cringing at some descriptions and actions of the characters as I read, but it didn’t ruin the overall experience of the book.

The OG! I really enjoyed this book, perhaps even more so than the movie. The characters are great and even with some idea of what would happen and who would survive, I was still enthralled. I loved the cold opening and how all the pieces came together to show that a dinosaur was out and about attacking kids. I appreciated that the dinosaurs act like actual animals and not movie monsters like they have in some of the latest of this franchises movie entries (wasn’t Jurassic World just awful? Not even a cute kid and cool-looking dinos could save that flick). I was so interested in the idea that Timmy is the older one in the book. Hammond is also much more despicable here, but it really ramps up in his final perspective chapter; though
his death felt very contrived, I won’t say it bothered me much. Lex and Tim in the movie was clearly just Tim split in half, which was wise since Lex in the novel would annoy moviegoers. The movie lawyer is clearly Ed Regis without much Gennaro at all. Shame we didn’t get baby Rexy in the film or the velociraptor nest or the deal with the juvenile velociraptors on the ship. There’s a lot that was lost. The hunter survives, Malcolm dies, the lawyer lives, and there’s a lot of interesting dynamics between the characters.

It's a pretty scary book. I only reread this because I barely remembered the plot and it scared the shit out of 10-year-old me. It still scared me now but I didn't cry so that's a win.

If you're looking for something with a thorough buildup followed by a steep descent into madness, then this book is 10 billon percent for you.

However, my major gripe with the book is how the author wrote the female characters.
Lex was incredibly annoying
but what annoyed me the most was how
Ellie was sexualised and sorta... overlooked? By other men.

Anyways I found most of
the character deaths
to be well-deserved so yay.
